I don't know what to do. I can't stop crying. I told my family I thought he should be put down and they all agreed, said they'd put him down this week. It's all well and good, I don't think I could stand going. I'm one of those people who just breaks down. I can't go to viewings at funerals or anything like that... I couldn't stand to watch my cat die because I elected to make him. I'm sobbing as it is right now. What if he still wants to live? He came back from this last time. I went down and talked to him and he doesn't seem to be in horrible amounts of pain, just sleepy and somewhat out of it. What if he still wants to live? He certainly isn't ready to die, it seems to me. I don't know. But knowing tomorrow is the last day i'll ever see him is killing me. Absolutely killing me. It's silly to be so upset about a cat, but i've had him for seventeen years. He was my first pet ever. I love him so much, he's special because he's that number one spot.

Aw, hon, I'm so sorry you have such a tough choice to make. I don't really have any advice since I haven't seen your little guy myself, but I'm sure you will make a good choice.

It is not silly to be upset over a cat. I wish I could give you some comforting words, but it just sucks. Losing a pet is always hard, they're not just animals, they're part of your family.

You said earlier he was purring a lot, and being snuggly. One of my cats who was 14 when he died (I was 20) said goodbye by cuddling and purring. He'd never been so loving before, and when I was home for Christmas break he wouldn't leave me alone. This was a cat who never really forgave me for being a six year old girl when he was a kitten (I was all about the whole "oooooooohhh cute cuddly kitten. I'm gonna love him and hug him and squeeze him and, and,... Mom, why doesn't Pepper like me?"). My mom found him curled up in her closet a few days after I went to back to school.

He just may be saying goodbye and letting you know it's ok and that he loves you.

I know just what you're going through. Had the same thing with my dog this past summer. I had her for fourteen years and she was my first animal, too. She had the whole up and down with illnesses thing too, and we debated several times putting her down, only to have her bounce right back. She was actually running around (as well as she could with insane arthritis) chasing my other dog the day before we put her down. She basically collapsed the next day and we knew it was time.

Animals let you know in different ways that they're ready to go. Sometimes it's a noticeable change in behavior or character, sometimes it's a more physical thing. It's always hard, but it's to love an animal that we are cursed with having to let them go.

Best wishes to you and your family.

Our vet already thought we should put him down last time, just b/c he's emaciated, but he was eating fine.

He hasn't eaten in about 3 days now. However, when my mom was saying she was taking him in tomorrow, he started to drink, which he hasn't done either.

It's just hard.

I'm sorry that you have to go through this. However, 17 is pretty old for a cat, so be glad he made it this far.

Aw *hugs* :(

I know it's difficult, but really, you're making the best decision for him. You don't want him to keep starving himself or suffer right?

I feel so bad for this cat (Creamy) at work (I work at a kennel). Her owners dropped her off for boarding last June, then decided they really didn't want her anymore and decided to leave her there until they found a new home for her :( She's about 17 as well, but is on all kinds of medication and needs prescription diet food. She's as sweet as can be too, but she's so skinny and arthritic she just slowly hobbles around. Nobody at my work can take her, for various reasons, and her owner's still haven't found a home for her, but won't take her back, yet they continue to pay to board her and for her meds/food.

Personally, I don't get it. I would take her home in a second! But I can't afford the meds/food, and I'm afraid my 4 cats would beat her up :( I know for a fact one of them would because she'll chase my almost 19-year-old guy around if he comes near her :/

I'll have to take a pic of Creamy at work tomorrow for you. She's such a sweetie I can't imagine why her owners would continue to pay for her, but not want to keep her :( She's the epitome of a "lap kitty."
